Seasonal variation in light penetration and subsurface chlorophyll-α in southern Lake Michigan observed by a glider

چکیده

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) in collaboration with the Observing System and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, Environmental Laboratory (NOAA GLERL) deployed an autonomous underwater glider southern Lake Michigan several times per year between 2012 2019 to collect offshore (>30 m depth) limnological measurements, including temperature, photosynthetically active radiation (beginning during 2015), chlorophyll-α fluorescence. From these data, we calculated mixed layer depth, measures of light penetration (diffuse attenuation coefficient, first optical euphotic zone depth), depth subsurface maxima. During summer, mean was typically 10–15 m, Kd PAR 0.1–0.17 m−1, 6–9 35–40 maxima 30–35 m. We also observed substantial spatial temporal variation values across basin within among seasons. Glider-based observations provide a wider horizontal vertical perspective than other methods (e.g., ship- satellite-based observations, buoys, fixed moorings), are therefore valuable, complementary tool limnology. set reported here seasonal basin-scale information that may help identify anomalies useful future glider-assisted investigation into role biophysical processes limnology ecology.

An event-driven phytoplankton bloom in southern Lake Michigan observed by satellite

[1] Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) images from June 1998 show a surprising early summer phytoplankton bloom in southern Lake Michigan that accounted for approximately 25% of the lake’s annual gross offshore algal primary production. By combining the satellite imagery with in situ measurements of water temperature and wind velocity we show that the bloom was triggered by a brief...

Seasonal zooplankton community variation in Karatas Lake, Turkey

This study was carried out to determine seasonal variation and zooplankton community structure in Karataş Lake, Southern Turkey. Zooplankton samples were collected seasonally between 2002 and 2003 in two stations using a zooplankton net of 55-µm mesh size. A total of 42 taxa were identified, including 19 taxa (45.2 %) Rotifera, 16 taxa (38.1 %) Cladocera, and 7 taxa (16.7 %). Copepoda. Among th...

Seasonal and spatial dynamics of Th/U disequilibria in southern Lake Michigan

[1] Measurements of Th/U disequilibria were made on an approximately bimonthly basis over the course of a year in nearshore (10–40 m deep) and offshore (160 m deep) surface waters of the southern basin of Lake Michigan (18,100 km). The mean activity of U in Lake Michigan measured 230 ± 20 dpm m , approximately 1 order of magnitude lower than what is typically found in marine systems. Measured m...
